London's vintage and retro treasures are among my top things about the city. London is the ideal location to find a unique present for an occasion or a nostalgic present for Christmas, or anything that is more meaningful than your typical high-end set.

Vintage markets are one of my favorite weekend rituals. Portobello Road always tops my list, not just due to its vibrant chaos, but for the variety of items available. You can find everything from mid-century homeware to enamel kitchen tins for the kitchen and vintage vinyl records that are still bursting with life. I'm not sure how many times I've walked away with "just one small item" which turned into a complete bag of treasures.

For something more refined, I usually head to Shoreditch and site Islington. There are vintage shops that are boutique in these areas which specialize in certain time periods. For example there's a store which specializes in 1940s-era fashion and another that focuses on 1970s lighting. You can spend a whole hour chatting with the owner about the history behind the lamp or the leather bag.

Maker's marks, original labels and even a little wear and tear add character. Antique dealers in London are often eager to tell the story behind the item. This narrative is often included in the present. Imagine gifting a scarf dating back to the 1950s that traveled through Europe or a typewriter that was used to send love letters to loved ones in the years past. This transforms a gift into a living part of the past.

Of course, part of the fun is mixing the traditional with the new. I often mix a vintage home decor with contemporary packaging or fresh flowers to give it a fresh appearance. It's an excellent way to make something old-fashioned feel new while respecting its heritage.

London also has spectacular seasonal fairs, particularly during Christmas time. For me, London is the perfect background for that huntan urban area that is proud of its history while still feeling alive and vibrant.

When you next go to the to shop for gifts, stay away from the soulless high street chains. Put on your most comfortable shoes and go a Saturday treasure-hunting around London. You never know what treasures you will discover, but I can assure you that it will be memorable.
