London's retro and homepage vintage treasures are one of my top things about the city. London is the ideal place to find a unique gift for a birthday or a retro present for Christmas, or something more meaningful than a typical high-end set.

One of my most-loved weekend activities is to wander through the city's antique markets. Portobello Road always tops my list, not just due to its vibrant riot of colour, but also for the sheer variety. You can find everything from mid-century kitchenware and enamel kitchen tins to vinyl records that still squeak with life. I've lost track of the number of times I've left with "just one small gift" which turned into a bag of treasures.

I like going to Shoreditch or Islington for something more carefully curated. There are boutique vintage shops in these areas which specialize in certain time periods. For example, there is a shop that specializes in 1940s style and another one that focuses on the 1970s in lighting. It's a shopping experience where you're talking to the proprietor of the shop for about half an hour about the history of a lamp or the provenance of a satchel made of leather.

When buying retro items I always seek authenticity. Maker's marks, original labels, and even a bit of wear and tear adds character. Antique dealers in London are often willing to share the story behind the piece. The story is usually included in the gift. Imagine giving a scarf that once travelled across Europe in the 1950s or a typewriter that tapped out love letters a few decades ago. It turns an item of gift into a piece of history.

Mixing old and new is part of the fun. I often pair a vintage home accent with modern packaging or fresh flowers to give it a fresh appearance. It's an excellent way to give something old a new look while honoring its roots.

London has a range of seasonal fairs. They are particularly popular during Christmas.
