Fortunately in 2022 the new owner of Miami Seaquarium pledged to work with a group of Lolita advocates dubbed Friends of Toki and the Lummi tribe, who consider her to be a family member and plan to eventually move her to open water. The plan included a sanctuary pen on the west coast of Washington where she could spend the rest of her days receiving human care and be monitored by scientists. The sanctuary pen was planned to be hundreds of times bigger than her Miami house and is surrounded by ocean, not concrete tanks.
